Rail Runner Service Remains Suspended

Rail Service Suspension Continues

The New Mexico Rail Runner Express passenger service remains suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rio Metro officials and the Governor’s reopening task force have been working on new COVID-19 operational protocols that will be instituted on the train once service resumes.  The restart of Rail Runner passenger service is directly tied to how well the state is doing in slowing the spread of the Coronavirus. Unfortunately, given the recent rise in COVID cases and for the safety and health of passengers, service will remain suspended until further notice.

Positive Train Control Testing Continues

While the Rail Runner passenger service has been suspended for the past seven months, Rio Metro has been able to make great progress on its implementation of Positive Train Control (PTC). All equipment installation and system testing has been completed, and Rail Runner is in the final implementation phase prior to system certification by the Federal Railroad Administration.  This means that all trains, including BNSF freight trains and Amtrak passenger service, will be running with PTC protection engaged as part of the final evaluation of PTC implementation.
